    Description

Meji Period Japanese Crepe Paper Kobunsha Fukurotoji Book - Hasegawa c1880
4" x 6" book, woodblock printed illustrations, some color. The story is The Silly Jelly Fish by T. Hasegawa, published by Kobunsha. I have included a link full of info on these types of Meji period fairy tale books. There is an awful lot of info to disseminate, so I have added a link below with a ton of info on the different books of Hasegawa.
This is woodblock printed onto crepe paper, the pages are pouch bound, in Japan called Fukuro-Toji, preventing the woodblock ink from spoiling the next sheet. The binding style is called
Yatsume Toji, with four small punched holes along the spine, and a single thread running from one hole to the next. I believe this is an early printing, as the list of fairy tales in the back show No. 14 (the next in this series) is "in the press". The cover does not include the top line seen on other versions...Japanese Fairy Tales Series, No. 13. Nor does it show Kobunsha info on the bottom, also the line "Told in English by B. H. Chamberlain" is in more of a handwritten typeface, than the more commonly seen serif style. The illustrations are wonderful and the interior colors bright.
There is a long vertical tear on the front cover, that someone put cellophane tape on. I have not attempted to remove it, but it is possible it might release with careful use of steam. The back half of the last pouch, which made up the back cover is missing. There is a hole above the monkey on the cover, which looks like it was made when someone used a dip ink pen to write a name (Sessie ____?). Some of the interior pages have folds and a few stains, but no big rips, or missing pages besides half of the back pouch as mentioned.
